Improve your exercise, focus, and health by sipping on water every day.
It’s common knowledge that we all need to drink water daily. For many years, there have been ongoing debates as to how much we need on an individual basis. An average person on a day-to-day basis, without exercise, will lose 2500 milliliters (mL) of fluid. This will increase significantly when participating in exercise. If you fail to replace these fluids, it will have negative effects on the body.
Vitality
Drinking water is important to ensure we stay functioning smoothly, achieving homeostasis – the body’s natural equilibrium. Hydration will help proper functioning of the brain. Hydrated brain cells are better supplied with fresh, oxygen-laden blood, meaning a good environment for cognitive function. Mild dehydration, between 1 and 2 percent loss in body weight, can impair the ability to concentrate. The next time you’re feeling lethargic and tired, sip on some fresh water instead of grabbing a cup of coffee!
Performance
We need water to keep our bones, muscles, and fascia (the connective tissue) working well. Bones need adequate hydration to remain strong and flexible and proper hydration helps to lubricate the body’s joints. The majority of our muscle muscle tissue is made up of water, around 75 percent, and the nutrients needed to feed these muscles are transported through the blood stream. Lack of water can cause tissue damage as well as muscle wasting.
Especially if you’re exercising, it’s important to stay hydrated. Ensure that you’re drinking enough water every day (1/2 ounce per pound of body weight), and 500 mL more per hour of physical activity.
