How to Break the Cycle of Sugar Addiction

Craving something sweet? Fight off a sugar addiction with these tips.

When it’s mid-afternoon, many of us get that craving for sugar, whether it’s for a milkshake, candy, or chocolate. If you’ve tried to fight off the sugar fix before, you know that it’s nearly impossible just to have one bite or resist the temptation of a cupcake or donut that lurks in the employee kitchen. Sugar addiction is an all too real issue. If not managed correctly, you could fall victim to it!

It’s important to understand that you quite literally get out what you put in. Be aware of all the negative side effects and health concerns that come along with consuming processed sugar. Not only are you consuming empty calories, but artificial sugars harm your cholesterol, increases your risk of diseases, and causes deposits of fat to accumulate in the liver. With consistent practice in food discipline, you can fight those stubborn cravings and remove the addiction!

To kick your sugar addition, it takes a dose of patience, self-control, and a handful of healthy substitutes.

Check out these easy ways to manage your cravings and get to the other side of your sugar detox:

Reach for whole fruit

Fruit contains fructose, which is metabolized differently from sweets. The natural sugars in fruit are much better for our health than processed and artificial sweeteners and sugars found in candy, chocolate, and drinks. Reaching for an apple will satisfy your sugar craving without dangerously spiking your sugar levels.

Ditch artificial sweeteners

Although diet soda and sugar-free gum have been known to help those who are trying to cut down on sugar intake, aspartame, sucralose, saccharine, and stevia are not as healthy as we’re led to believe. Large amounts of these sweeteners can increase your desire for sweet food, making us need more and more to feel satisfied.

Clear out the cupboards

Start fresh by cleaning out the sweets and sugary food items from your home and office. We can’t control all the environments that we’re in, but we should control the ones we can. Eliminating any chance of indulging in sugary treats means that you’ll be successful in kicking the habit.

Manage your magnesium levels

Craving chocolate? Research shows this reaction may be particularly common amount people deficient in the mineral magnesium. You can head off cravings by eating plenty of magnesium-rich dark leafy greens, tofu, legumes, and nuts.
